Bird WatchingBird watchers will love Gundagai, as it is an excellent base from which to find many of the region’s rare woodland birds. Your host Mason can advise on the best places to go for this. On the edge of the Murrumbidgee floodplain you wont have to walk far to see a diverse array of birdlife such as dollar birds, sacred kingfisher, rainbow beeaters and yellow rosellas, with many of them often seen from the verandah of the house. For some of the rarer woodland birds such as swift parrots, diamond firetails, brown treecreepers and black-chinned honeyeaters there are a number birding hotspots close by (directions and maps provided at the cottage). Gundagai is a superb place to find superb parrots. While sometimes they are seen in the town, a 15 minute drive to the small village of Nangus will place you in the strong hold of this threatened species. The Gundagai area is the overlap of the Yellow and the Crimson Rosella. As these two races often interbreed they can come in a wide array of colours. |
