Gundagai

Discover Gundagai’s rich history of bushrangers, pioneering triumphs, Wiradjuri heroes and the site of Australia’s worst natural disaster. Sample local wines and produce, relax over coffee and pick up a bargain at the local antique shops. Unwind and take in the country air.
  • Gundagai is an excellent spot for recreational activities with the Murrumbidgee River and Morleys Creek providing for cycling, walking, fishing, boating and bird watching. There are also free BBQ facilities, a playground and excellent swimming spots, including the Olympic pool.
  • Gabriel Gallery (located above the town’s Mitre 10 gift store) contains an extensive and well renowned collection of historic photos of the town and its residents taken around 1900 by Doctor Charles Louis Gabriel. Lovers of history will also find our Historical Museum fascinating, with displays of pioneer life, bushrangers and one of Phar Lap’s saddlecloths.
  • South Gundagai cemetery contains one of Australia's rarest vegetation communities: White Box Woodland. A short self-guided walk with interpretive signs will help you appreciate the significance of this area. Spring to early summer is the best time to see the wildflower displays and it is also a great place to see Crested Shrike Tits.
  • Golfers will love the 18 hole Bidgee Banks Golf Course, which meanders its way through giant river red gums on the Murrumbidgee floodplain. It is regarded as one of the best in country NSW. A basic set of golf clubs are provided with the house.
  • An interesting short self-guided ‘Two Foot Tour’ of the township will show you many of Gundagai's charming historic buildings, including the courthouse, restored railway station, hotels and our famous historic wooden bridges and viaducts. Available free at the Visitor Information Centre.
  • As well as hotels and several cafes and restaurants, and art and craft galleries, Gundagai offers delightful secondhand and antique shops, several gift shops, a supermarket, bakery, pharmacy, medical centre, video shop, hardware and nursery, post office, garage and newsagency.
  • Gundagai racecourse is home to the famous Snake Gully Cup usually held on the third Friday in November each year. In 2009 the Snake Gully Cup is on November 13.
  • On the third weekend in September Gundagai is alive with Irish and Australian music and culture for the annual Turning Wave Festival. Go to www.turningwave.org.au for more information.
  • Bird watchers will love Gundagai as it is an excellent base from which to find many of the region’s rare woodland birds. Your host Mason can advise on the best places to go for this.
  • Eight kilometres (five miles) north of Gundagai visit the Dog on the Tuckerbox, where you can enjoy a choice of eateries and sample some local produce available to purchase at Bullocky Bill’s.
